Can fashion be sentimental?
I think everyone has one item in their closet, that they just can't part with.
Back in 1988, my mum took me shopping to Forges in Footscray. I was so excited & curious to see what we were going to buy. My mum suggested that I pick something that I would wear, of course this is every mothers question to their child, "Would you wear it, if you will, I'll buy it for you"?.
Being eight years old, the initial thought running through my mind was to buy a toy or something useless.
We start walking through the aisles and there i saw it, like a shining light, a blue & white robe, with big blue stars running down the sides.
It was beautiful, soft & warm, like the sun, it was my new favourite thing, little did I know, it would be my favourite thing forever.
So mum buys me the robe & I take it everywhere with me, to sleepovers, bed & around the house.
Years have passed & still till this day, it still fits! & it's one item I can't throw away.
My family still asks me the same question over & over, "Have you still got that thing"?
To me it's not a thing but my everything, even though the front pocket is completely torn & it has a small burn mark on it.
Memories last a lifetime and clothes symbolise such experiences, which shape us & remind us, who we were, are & will be always.
